As part of the cooperation between Darnytskyi District State Administration of Kyiv and the ROMED2 program, an event was organized to commemorate the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Roma Genocide.

On August 3, 2015, an event was held at the premises of Family Reading Library No.160 in commemoration of the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Roma Genocide. The event included a meeting of the librarians from the Darnytskyi district with Natalia Zinevych, a candidate of historical sciences and a senior researcher at the M.S. Hrushevsky Institute of Ukrainian Archaeography and Source Studies. Also present were Olga Vesnyanko, a journalist, and Zemfira Kondur, the Vice-President of the Roma Women’s Charitable Foundation “Chirikli.”

During the event, participants had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with photos, videos, and historical documents related to the history of Roma people in Ukraine and the tragic events of World War II. Discussions were also held on contemporary issues faced by the Roma population in Ukraine and future plans for integrating the Roma community into the social life of the Darnytskyi district.

The mission of “Chiriklo” radio is to give a voice to the Roma community, disseminate information about safety, health, human rights, ethnic and national policies, as well as specific government programs, including the Strategy for the Integration of the Roma National Minority into Ukrainian Society until 2020. The radio station also aims to present various events and initiatives, using new technologies to provide the Roma community with the opportunity to expand their rights and opportunities, facilitate communication and understanding on both the national and European levels.

“Chiriklo” radio will include a cultural component, introducing listeners to the history of Roma music, its contemporary directions in Ukraine and the world, and featuring interviews with musicians and vocalists. The content will target a wide range of listeners, particularly the youth, and will be spread through social media and a mobile application.

The first broadcast of “Chiriklo” radio is scheduled for September 25 at 5:00 PM on the website radiochiriklo.com. The radio station plans to work with correspondents in different cities of Ukraine, collaborate with other media outlets, and develop volunteer and internship projects for Roma students and young journalists. The station will operate in a multimedia format, and after a year, they plan to start broadcasting on FM channels.
