On July 30, 2024, an important conference “Empowering and Protecting the Rights of Roma Women through Effective Policy Implementation” took place in Kyiv. The event brought together experts to discuss critical issues of protecting the rights of Roma women, especially those who were forced to flee their homes due to the war.

Experts drew attention to the needs of Roma women who face difficulties in adapting to new living conditions and need additional support to integrate into new communities. One of the main problems is the lack of necessary documents, which limits their ability to access social services.
The role of youth and international experience:
The conference participants emphasized the importance of youth as a factor of change and inclusion in society. Representatives of the Council of Europe shared successful practices of protecting Roma rights in Europe and emphasized the active support of the European Union in implementing European standards in the field of human rights and national minorities in Ukraine.
Establishment of the Working Group:
The event resulted in the creation of a Working Group to promote the rights of Roma women in Ukraine. This group will coordinate political actions and other initiatives necessary to eliminate discrimination against Roma women. It will also provide advice on how to promote equality for Roma women in the medium and long term.
Conclusions of the conference:
The conference was an important platform for discussing problems and finding solutions to protect the rights of Roma women. Speakers agreed that effective policies and international support are key to improving about Roma in Ukraine. The event is another step towards building a more inclusive and just society where the rights of all citizens, regardless of their ethnicity, are protected.
