Today, on April eighth, we mark International Roma Day — a day of dignity, culture, and visibility for Roma communities around the world.
This day carries special meaning. It is not only about recognizing Roma history, language, and culture, but also about the ongoing struggle for equal rights, overcoming discrimination, and the right to be heard in society.
Roma Voices in Public Space
On this day in Kyiv, an important event took place, focusing on Roma participation in public life, combating discrimination, and strengthening cultural identity.
During a panel discussion on anti-discrimination in media, Chirikli project coordinator Yulian Kondur emphasized that the Roma community must shape its own voice in the public sphere — through its own media, stories, and lived experiences.
Changes Already Happening
We are already seeing these changes:
— the Roma radio station “Chiriklo” has resumed its work;
— podcasts translated into the Roma language have appeared on Ukraine’s public broadcaster.
Equality Begins with Visibility
International Roma Day is a reminder that equality begins with visibility — and change starts with the voice we use to represent ourselves.
