Today, on August 2 — the Remembrance Day of the Victims of the Romani Genocide — a representative of the Roma Women’s Fund “Chiricli” joined Finnish Roma in a memorial ceremony held at a monument in Finland. The event became a symbol of unity and mutual respect among Romani communities across different countries.
Finnish Roma, known as Kaale, played a significant role in defending Finland’s independence during the resistance of 1939–1945. Their heroism and dedication laid the foundation for recognition and the strengthening of national identity for the Romani community in the country.
Today, as Roma in Ukraine stand in defense of their homeland against Russian aggression, this history takes on new meaning. We gain a deeper understanding of our shared experiences — marked by struggle, loss, the pursuit of freedom, and dignity.
This day is not only about remembrance. It is about our visibility, our presence, solidarity, and the continuity of Romani communities’ fight for human rights, equality, and a life of dignity. By honoring the past, we shape the future.
We Remember. We Honor. We Act.
