From April 1st to 4th, 2024, Lina Kondur, legal expert of the Chirikli team, participated in the 3rd Forum of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Working Party 6 in Geneva, Switzerland. The forum brought together experts and advocates to address pressing global challenges, including environmental harm, gender inequality, and climate change.
On April 2nd, the discussions centered around the physical harm caused by industrial plants to local communities. Lina highlighted the distressing health impacts on the Roma community in the Perechin area of the Zakarpattian region, attributed to the emissions from a local Wood Chemical Plant. The community suffers from severe health issues such as asthma, chronic cough, pneumonia, stomach ailments, skin problems, and an increased risk of cancer.
The following day, the focus shifted to educational challenges faced by minority groups across various countries. Lina shared monitoring results over the discrimination experienced by Roma children in schools within the Zakarpattian and Odessa regions. She detailed Chirikli’s efforts in combating this discrimination and fostering a more inclusive educational environment.
Recommendations were made to the UNECE Working Party 6, aiming to address these significant issues. Lina’s contributions focussed on bringing to light the struggles of marginalized communities and seeking collaborative solutions to enhance their living conditions and rights.
Chiricli continues to be at the forefront of advocacy for minority rights, ensuring that the voices of the underrepresented are heard on global platforms.
