08/11/2019

4-5 November 2019, the International Charitable Organization “Roma Women’s Fund “Chirikli,” together with the International Minority Rights Group, conducted a roundtable discussion “Building a Coalition: Roma and People with Disabilities” to address the situation of people with disabilities, particularly Roma with disabilities, in Ukraine.

The discussion involved experts and researchers on Roma issues, representatives of Roma civil society organizations, members of the National Assembly of People with Disabilities, Romani mediators, representatives of government bodies, and the representative of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights.

The event participants were presented with the initial findings of the ongoing research on the “Current Situation of the Rights of Roma with Disabilities.” Following the presentations, a discussion took place, and recommendations were formulated based on the outcomes of the roundtable for further inclusion in the ongoing research.

As a result of the meeting, the Roma Women’s Fund “Chirikli,” in response to a request from the Secretary-General of the National Assembly of People with Disabilities, Victoria Nazarenko, and the Head of the Department of the National Assembly of People with Disabilities, Larisa Bayda, agreed to collaborate on a coalition with civil society organizations focused on countering prejudiced attitudes towards people with disabilities belonging to the Roma minority and enhancing awareness of human rights.
