We continue to introduce a special course on Roma mediation. On September 6-7, 2017, a two-day training session "Mediation as a form of social work with the Roma minority" was held in Kyiv under the ROMED-2 program.

Basic information about the training course

The Youth Department of the Council of Europe, in co-operation with the Ministry of Youth and Sport of Ukraine and Roma non-governmental partners, will organise a regional training course for young multipliers linked with Roma communities. The training course will support the participation and mobilisation of young multipliers to work for combating antigypsyism and for supporting Roma young people’s participation on the local level and in youth policy processes.

To resolve this issues of illegal houses in Roma settlements the CAG together with fund "Chirikli" and partner organization fund "Blago" appealed to the Deputy Mayor Olga Travina to set up a working group to develop mechanisms of legalization of houses in Roma settlements.

The crisis situation in Ukraine resulted in additional burden on the Roma population. Since the crises started, 10,000 Roma people are estimated to have fled from their residences in the Eastern part of the country. These people have joined the large community of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in Ukraine and are among IDPs' most vulnerable groups. However, many are not even recognized officially as citizens of Ukraine.

During the height of the Maidan protests, as thousands took to the streets to reject injustice as a way of life, a marauding gang made its way into a Roma settlement in Korosten, Ukraine. They entered homes by force, threatening the occupants with brandished weapons, taking everything they owned—money, jewelry—before giving the residents a choice: leave the city or be killed.
